Montessori School of Camden Hosts IGS Training

Montessori School of Camden Hosts IGS Training

SUBJECT:  Press Release – Montessori Teacher Preparation Course DATE:  June 17th 2014 How lovely it would be if Montessori teachers grew on trees! Mostly, they don’t; they work for one to three years of concentrated study and a year-long internship in order to grasp the fundamentals of demonstration of lessons and classroom management necessary to create the very special environment required for a Montessori education. This summer seven people from across the Carolinas gathered in Camden, SC to take the first step to become Montessori guides. The Institute for Guided Studies (IGS), the oldest Montessori teacher preparation program in the state, organized the week of training at The Montessori School of Camden (MSC), where the main office of IGS is located. The course, titled “Foundations of Montessori Philosophy and Educational Theory for the Early Childhood Guide” serves as the introduction to Montessori for those preparing to become classroom directors, and is also used as the course for Montessori classroom assistants. The coursework includes historical perspective of early childhood educators, theorists, and philosophers, the life and work of Maria Montessori, personal and professional development, peace education, stress and time management, staff and program management, communications and human relations, classroom management, community awareness and involvement and the art of observation. Preparing to become elementary classroom directors are Hillary Henry from Berkeley County Schools, Elementary program candidate and Kelly Nevling from MSC. For these two the course is one of two preliminary courses before beginning elementary teacher preparation. Taking the course to become trained assistants are Allison Hilton from Montessori at Sandy Ford (NC), Catherine Catalano from the Montessori School of Columbia,...
Montessori Students Embrace New Author

Montessori Students Embrace New Author

Art Collins released a nine-book series that inspires readers to want more at the conclusion of each chapter and especially each book. East Cooper Montessori Charter School (ECMCS) students and Pinckney Elementary students flocked to the Barnes and Noble in Mount Pleasant,  SC on Saturday, May 17, 2014 to get Art Collins to sign their books and to add more to the talk he gave at East Cooper Montessori on Thursday, May 15, 2014. The students at ECMCS treated the author as if he were a rock star as he arrived taping blue feathers to the floor leading him to the classroom where he would reveal the details of writing their favorite stories. Over the past month the classes of Upper Elementary students read Art Collins’ first book “In the Forest”. Once the introductory book, “In the Forest” was read to the class, many students began campaigning parents for more books in the series and even teachers to add the next books to the read-a-loud in class selections. When the author visited this week, each classroom decided to portray some aspect of his book. One class the students brainstormed about what they imagined the mystical creatures and characters looked like, and then created them. When Mr. Collins entered the room he was greeted by flying wolf crows, an underwater dragon, a jaguar, snakes, and many other characters and creatures from his books. It was like he was stepping into one of his books. Another class  had the sixth years use a story board to create a movie trailer and portrayed the book (linked below). Once they created a script, the forth...
